Excerpts from
Swing is King II

The Apollo Big Band recreates the sounds, atmosphere and mood of the 1940s swing era and beyond. The band has been expanding its repertoire with tributes to the orchestras of Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Stan Kenton and Woody Herman plus arrangers Jerry Grey, Quincy Jones, Nelson Riddle and Sammy Nestico.

Swing is King II features numbers from the 1940s to the 1960s and is spiced up by a few more modern compositions. Today's programme includes rousing, driving numbers and soulful ballads from Swing is King II.

1:00 RhythmWorks drumming in Africa RhythmWorks
African drumming

Graeme Goodwin today plays Djembe with percussionist Sunny-Boy (Lamin Sanneh).

RhythmWorks was formed by Graeme in 1999 in the Gambia, West Africa.

Trained in The Gambia; Graeme found his own calling with the Djembe after a near fatal car accident; the drum being an essential tool in speeding his full recuperation.

He has been playing as an apprentice to Djeli Tomas Camara - a 30 year veteran of the Guinean Djoliba and African Ballet - for 5 years. Together they train Djembe drummers at the RhythmWorks drumming centre Alla Leake Kunda in the Gambia.

Graeme and his family are committed to their extended African family, to the Djembe, and bringing West African percussion to our communities.

Zertain Effects - Skyport Ade Tucker Folk Music live at
The Bandstand

Patrick Cogswell and Skyport Ade Tucker, a duo these days, but solo players too; both blues legends in their day. Skyport writes a song a week about Basingstoke, quite a feat under the circumstances.

Bill Mackinnon, passionate singer and song writer, moving spirit of Newbury Jam, excellent musician on many instruments and writer of the Beautiful Chaddleworth Maid and other songs of a local theme.

Dave Newson, musical entrepreneur, creator of the brilliant but short lived Oxford Roots, superb musician and session player, a virtuoso of the Base Guitar.

Richard Cox-Smith, increasingly celebrated, a man of steel and superb fingers, modest and stunning at the same time, what more can be said, ran the sessions at the Rampant Cat for many a year.

Plus.. A mystery lady, not yet revealed her name, but watch the horizon closely.

3:00 Gail Hendrickx Gail Hendrickx Jazz Experience
First class jazz, swing, Latin and blues

Gail Hendrickx hails from Swansea and, as with so many of her compatriots, singing has always been an important part of her life.

Like all great singers, appearing before an audience is an essential element to developing as an artist, so in her early days Gail started singing in public with a modern band playing rock in church!

At school she was an enthusiastic member of the choir and performed a great deal of choral music which gave her many opportunities to develop her voice and technique. Even at an early age success touched her and she won a few Eisteddfods. Gail also appeared on BBC and HTV, and even starred in her own programme. During this period she had the great fortune to work and appear with artists such as Cliff Morgan, Ted Rogers, Stan Stennett, Frank Carson, Bonnie Tyler, Billie J Kramer. After winning a Butlins talent competition at Pwllheli she was signed up by Decca and all this by the time she was 18.
