New to the Newbury Fringe Festival in 2007 is the Art of Bell Ringing. This art, craft, mystery and science has intrigued the population for over four centuries and is still practised regularly by some 40,000 people.
New to the Newbury Fringe Festival in 2007 is the Art of Bell Ringing. This art, craft, mystery and science has intrigued the population for over four centuries and is still practised regularly by some 40,000 people.
Dating from the 17th century this old English Art of ringing church bells individually or in sequence, by rhythmically drawing on a rope fastened to a wheel rotating the bell, is performed throughout the land.
In conjunction with Newbury Fringe Festival the Bell Ringers from St Nicolas Church are opening the tower and inviting you for a tour at 3pm or 4pm on Sunday 27th May. Take advantage of this rare opportunity and experience this old English art first hand. With exhibits, demonstrations and the chance to see the ringing room, bell chamber and the view from the top of the tower you will be able to fully appreciate the fascinating art of change ringing.
At 5pm the bell ringers will start a quarter peal and demonstrate their talents. To make an advance booking and reserve places on either tour please contact Martin Rice on 01635 30709.
The Newbury Fringe Festival is an annual community arts festival aimed at showcasing local artists, craftspeople, bands, musicians and dancers. In 2007 the festival will be presented in various venues around Newbury on Sunday 27th May, with an extra day of music in Victoria Park on Monday 28th May.
